Become a School Governor at The Hemel Hempstead School

The Hemel Hempstead School (HHS) is seeking passionate volunteers to join our Local Governing Board. This is a rewarding, strategic role where you can make a real difference to the education and future of our pupils. We are looking for individuals with a range of skills and experience, not just those with a background in education. 

Our School

HHS  is a mixed, non-selective academy for over 1200 students ages 11-18 with a large Sixth Form. The school is proud of its a curriculum which combines academics with wider experiences (HHEx) to develop students' character and skills. The school is an academy, one of a number across Hertfordshire, Essex and Bedfordshire within the Scholars Education Trust (SET). 

Role of the School Governor

You will have the opportunity to be part of  a diverse Local Governing Board which helps contribute to the strategic direction of the school and is committed to school improvement in order to ensure the best outcomes for its pupils . 

The purpose of the LGB is to: 

• ensure clarity of vision and strategic direction for the school
• monitor and evaluate school performance
• support and also provide constructive challenge the school's senior leadership
• monitor financial performance and ensure value for money
• ensure that the voices of stakeholders are heard.  

The Candidate

We are looking for a rounded individual who is able be an active participant in discussions, work collaboratively and be respectful of the views of others. The candidate should be keen to use their skills and experience, gained through their life and career, for the benefit of the school

The candidate needs to be able to dedicate the time to attending LGB meetings (six per year held in the evenings), review papers prior to those meetings and also support the school through attendance at several events throughout the school year. When required governors may also be asked to serve on panels or committees within the school.

No formal qualifications are needed, and a comprehensive training program is available for new governors.
