Computing

Our students can choose to study Computer Science in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. Our curriculum follows the OCR specifications (GCSE J277, A level H446).

It has a unit based format, enabling students to tackle the content in manageable sections which are then assessed.

GCSE Computer Science (Year 10 & 11)

In Year 10 and 11 students develop their skills and understanding of 'computer systems' and 'computational thinking, algorithms and programming'.

In 'computer systems' they learn about Systems architecture, Memory and storage, Computer networks, connections and protocols, Network security and Systems software. They also explore the ethical, legal, cultural and environmental impacts of digital technology.

In 'computational thinking, algorithms and programming' they are assessed on their understanding and skills in algorithms, programming fundamentals, producing robust programs, Boolean logic and programming languages and Integrated Development Environment.

A Level Computer Science (Year 12 & 13)

In A Level Computer Science, students develop their skills and understanding from what they've done in Key Stage 4. They begin by looking at the characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices. They move on to software and software development and exchanging data which improves their understanding of data types, data structures and algorithms. Students explore the legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues and elements of computational thinking. This improves their skill set in problem solving and programming which allows them to create algorithms to solve problems and standard algorithms.

Students are required to choose a computing problem to work through according to the guidance in the A Level specification. They apply the skills they have developed during their programme of study to demonstrate analysis of the problem, design of the solution, developing the solution and evaluation.
